It’s not altogether easy but if you have the ambition like our host here then it may be an ideal hobby! Just think of the collection of awesome knives you can pull together. Not a bad trading implement when bartering becomes the norm. Watch how he forges the knife below:

We were glad to see the blade in action at the end of the video. It brought about a few ideas that were not really explored in the above video.

Couldn’t such a blade be developed, strapped onto a long stick, and turned into a sort of spear? This weapon can easily be taken into the woods when hunting becomes imperative; for both bagging small animals and for protection!

    The leaf springs (1060 spring steel) of early Toyota or Datsun cars & trucks are a far better medium. If you can heat to 1800F and have steel carbide flux you can forge your own (folded or not) tanto or karambit. Chris laniro is right… lawnmower blades were quality until the mid 80’s. Classic mowers had thicker blades that were tempered at the forward side much like a katana blade.

    Old rusty files make great blades. A bit on the brittle side, but they hold an edge a good long time.
