It cannot be stressed enough that a gravity filter should not be relied upon to sterilize water – in fact, it cannot.

A gravity filter is a great way, though, to ensure the water you drink does not have debris in it.

If you have municipal water or sterilized water that you want to further purify, a gravity filter is one way of making sure your water is debris free.

While it does not sterilize water, you still have to sterilize it on your own, it does make sure that any debris from pipes or natural debris from a natural water source is removed.
