The rapid compression of air in the piston generates enough heat to ignite the char cloth.
This is allot harder to make than it looks plus you have to have “char” paper for it to work. It would be better to become proficient with flint and steel. You can purchase factory made compression ignition lighters, but you still need to make char paper for them.

Just cause shtf doesn’t mean lighters and matches will become rare or wiped off the Earth.

Okay, so you can’t keep a disposable lighter but you can keep up with this much larger device?….stock up on disposable lighters! Put several in your survival/bugout whatever bag! Keep it simple and light.
