There are a lot of fire starting tricks being passed on throughout the prepper and survivalist community. There are literally thousands of these tricks available to those who are willing to learn them.
The reason for this is because fire is so incredibly valuable for the survivor. With fire, you can fend off predators, cook meals, stay warm, dry out clothing, and treat water.
All of these are absolutely essential if you're endeavoring to survive for any length of time.
Now we have another trick that allows you to store a fair amount of fire starting material (cotton balls and petroleum jelly) within a compact container that can be opened and closed to get several uses, rather than just the one use that a typical fire starter hack would have.
Learn this great trick on the next page.

Is doesn’t say how you would start the cotton.
Mark Garcia
Misleading title… Only tells you how to store tinder material in a straw. No straw fire piston here.
Trevor Nickels
This is a good trick and all but it still requires some form of ignition to start the fire…this is just like makin a candle…it would work nice to get a fire going as long as u have a way to catch the cotton soaked in Vaseline on fire.
Christopher Turner check this out
Not meaning to insult your intelligence but that wax cotton takes a spark crazy good with any fire/steel 🙂
I’ve got a better one, it’s called a lighter
just make 20 or so and stick them in a zip baggie…. simple and the baggie will keep that$#%&!@*from gumming up your bag.
I use an old prescription bottle and pack it full of cotton balls and vasaline.. Holds more tinder, very durable and very little effort to put it together ..
those fingernails tho…..
An even better idea…
Not to insult your intelligence but you couldn’t lift the first sentence out LOL
This is dumb. If I’m planing on needing something to start a fire. I’m not gonna take string or a straw. I’m gonna have a lighter.
Reminds me to carry a magnifying glass
Tanya Wilson
A battery and a foil gum wrapper works too, but more people will have a lighter in their pocket than a battery or a straw
Or just flick a bick
Why when you can just strap a car battery yo your back
Can rub them together to start fire
I call B.S.,it’s like saying you can survive urban setting with just a wallet, just fill it with money when ever you get the opportunity
Alexandra Dezaray Schultz
Its good to know many ways to start a fire but its 2016, not real difficult to have several lighters, at least 3 lighters in a survival kit and one in your pocket.
For all the dumb ones here, the straw with the cotton is the fire starter or as it is commonly called tinder.
You use it to start small twigs or kindling because it maintains the heat source to burn the twigs. Then progress to larger branches going up to logs.
Obviously you need a fire source to start a fire, but you can’t start a large log on fire to begin with. Your lighter would run out of fuel before the log caught on fire.
OR. You can go out and buy a case of stick matches for next to nothing and a propane hand held torch at home Depot for $20 and stock up on extra refill tanks for $2 something each. I have 50 of them and they will light the wettest twigs and start a fire anywhere. I live deep in the woods and I am completely self contained. Forget this silly crap if you want to be prepared then get prepared. Where the$#%&!@*is anyone going to find cotton and an old straw when$#%&!@*hits the fan?
A lighter or matches..in a pinch I’ve got a magnifying glass in my wallet …everyone should know how to light a fire a few different ways lol
Look at all the bright mother fuckers here.
I have done this..it works great
That’s not using a straw to start a fire. That is using a straw to carry Fire Starting material
Or drug addicts snort lines. With them too.
Hope I don’t forget my straw next time I venture that far out into the backwoods
I’ll stick to a magnifying glass. Quick n ezy
all this convoluted fire starting nonsense when you can buy an armload of disposable lighters for a few bucks…
Ok when it really hits the fan I’m gonna find an arsonist to run with..
Magnesium stick and pitch is all this guide uses to get things going
George R. Gordon-Krohling
Scott Long
That’s so you get a good crease in that straw.
Always puzzles me why someone just doesn’t carry s lighter
Just ask Chih-Chuan Chang. He can do that in the rain. He’s a fire starting beast.
Thanks!
DUH…?
Tony Cortesi
That’s not a firestarter its tinder. (fuel) you still have to ignite it.
Straws are used to store many things, including matches. I’ve seen posts where they put salt and pepper in straws, drink powders, etc. The list goes on. And if you’re somewhere where you need to have things stored in a straw, which is out on the woods somewhere, you’re going to have your knife and a magnesium stick to get the fire started.
Just put dryer lint covered with petroleum jelly in an old medicine bottle. I have several so far.
when ya run out of the flint and butane type for starters and the grid isn’t back up, you’ll be thankful for having more than one way. I know this one that had several ways all the way back to friction… good luck y’all!
What? That’s it. No instructions on what to do with after assembly?
