Every year we hear about it on the news. Brave and adventurous men and women who decide to take a hike in the mountains or woods and inexplicably get lost. Some are found safe and others, sadly, are not.
The wilderness is a big place, and even the best of outdoorsmen will tell you a compass is vital. Hikers without one end up disoriented and cannot find their way back to a walking path or travel too far and lose the sun – or get caught in a fog – and cannot find their way back to their camp.
If the sun is up, you can always remember that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you know your camp was in a westerly direction, you have a good idea in what direction to walk.
However, if you are caught in a mist or dense fog? You are in deep trouble. Or maybe not!
After the break, go over to the next page. Read up on the “thumbdial.” When a compass or sundial is not available, a “thumbdial” could help you get home!
Jonathan Eller
Just stab your thumb, you won’t care where you’re going.
A Compass works in the fog as well.
When you aren’t packing your sun stone, this is ideal.
This is the STUPIDEST thing I ever waster 2 minutes reading. If you get lost in the woods with no compass, day or night, fog, no fog, rain, snow, no matter what the situation. There are two lifesaving tips to remember. Either of which will either get you found or help locate a road. 1. find an armadillo and follow it, it’s headed to the nearest paved road to be ran over, OR, 2 stand on a stump and$#%&!@* someone is bound to see you.
So sick of all the doggone ads!
I never get lost, only somewhere I’ve never been.
Nice one
Walter Whittemore have you heard of this?
Joe Roberts you made my day!! That was funny$#%&!@*!!!
Most that get lost , are some place they should not have been in the first place!
Um wait for the fog to lift
When lost, even on a deserted island, start playing solitaire. Some dickweed will look over your shoulder and tell you a move you overlooked
James Gentry
Lmao
I must be simple minded because I found the article interesting. I can only reiterate what I know to be true. Every one you meet is smarter than you! Just sayin’! If you have ever been lost with out the faintest idea of where you are and how you will survive it is not a laughing matter! I do not plan to have a house fire but I have a fire extinguisher on hand, just in case. I also believe in the adage, ”AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE’! I did not get to be 3 score 10 plus 7 years because I neglected safe practices or the knowledge offered by others who knew more than I did..
I like number two it’ll keep you warm too.
old school SAS.
This sight alawys seems to have the dumbest ways of doing things! They tell you how to start a fire, fine if you carry a chemistry set with you! But they don’t say, “Be sure and carry a compass, or tell you how to make a crude one? Last time I click on the “stupid channel”!
This is dumb, just carry a compass! I have never gotten so lost I couldn’t find my way back, most of the time just dead reconing works just fine for me, but then again, I grewup in a wilderness of sorts.
No
I carry a whistle with water proof matches a flint on the side and a compass on the end
I applaud you, sir. Damn fine work.
Now is that from experience John
That was hilarious!
John…for you and yours…
This is stupid
That’s a great idea!
Fog now just how can the fog be so damn tight that you cant see were your going ? Stay were you are it will pass. And if your that dumb then dont get lost
Lol
Your right, no matter the subject of a survival post there are always those who know everything there is to and knock the information as not being worthwhile. I however feel you can never learn too much, never know when something you read somewhere will kick in and save you.
Yeah, poke a hole in your thumbnail with a sharp blade. Your screams will bring someone, or maybe a bear will come eat you! Try a compass or look at an old tree. The moss and liechen is always thickest on the North side. No BS!
LO THE FRIKKIN’ L!! I am glad I swallowed that gulp of tea before reading this post! I’d be cleaning the whole damned kitchen right now!!
This reminds me of when I found a Second Lieutenant on the land navigation course at night. He was lost and trying to use the moon to get his bearings. I just said “Hooah” and left him there.
I remember a day i needed to know this ……….
I’ll just use my GPS….
Dumb Dumb and stupid!
I never heard of that before. Thanks for the tip.

Lmfao:)
Lmao!!!
Who comes up with these lame$#%&!@*articles?
Haha thanks for the laugh!
You never puncture the nail. You take a straight pin to come in from the side up under the nail.
After drilling a hole in your fingernail, you’ll scream so loud that anyone in 25 miles will know exactly where you are!
…more like a sundial

Interesting. Thanks
Kayla Moultrie wish I knew this before haha
