The Ultimate Land Navigation Manual: How to Orient Yourself With a Compass and Map

When you don’t know where you’re going, you’ve got to have the necessary skills to make it to your destination in one piece. One of those skills is navigating your surroundings. Even with both a compass and a map, it can still be tricky to navigate.

For example, it can be confusing to identify true north and magnetic north. The angle of your compass pointing towards “north” is going to be different from one location to another. Survivors have to be able to take declination – the angle between magnetic north and true north – into account as they examine their compass.

They also need to be able to orient their map to true north, and find their bearing using a map.
