Himalaya Mountains

Mountain climbing is one of the only ways left to see a sight that not many others have seen. It's a thrilling experience that thousands of people tackle every year, and a good portion of them die trying. Take a look below at the top ten peaks they are most likely to die on.

  1. Mt. Washington
    Height: 6,288 ft.
Although not high, this mountain has severe weather conditions. It has the highest wind ever measured at any weather station, 231 mph.
  2. Mount Everest

More than 1,500 people have climbed this mountain. It is attempted by many climbers every year, but surprisingly claims a small percentage of climbers.
  3. The Eiger
    Height: 13,025 ft.
The Eiger’s nickname is Mordwand (Murder Wall), mostly because of its heavy rock fall and its 5,900ft north face of rock and ice.
  4. Nanga Parbat
    Height: 26,657 ft.
It is also known as the Man Eater… This mountain is covered in rocks and ice making it extremely dangerous for climbers.
  5. Annapurna

183 climbers have attempted to climb this mountain, 61 climbers died trying. Annapurna has the highest fatality rate in the world.
  6. Mont Blanc Massif

People die every year due to the high altitude and rock slides, making it arguably the most dangerous mountain to climb.
  7. K2
    Height: 28,251 ft.
K2 has 300 successful summits and 80 fatalities. It has never been attempted to climb during the winter.
  8. Kangchenjunga
    Height: 28,169 ft.
It has a 22 percent fatality due to the serious avalanche and weather hazards that occur on the mountain.
  9. Dhaulagiri

A climber’s average trip lasts around 40 days. 18% of climbers have died attempting to reach the summit.
  10. Manaslu
    Height: 26,759 ft.
An extremely steep mountain with a very sharp peak. It has a high fatality rate of 59 deaths since 1950.

It's surprising that Everest has such a small fatality rate compared to its successful summits. K2, by contrast, is incredibly dangerous. To up the stakes, you could try and summit all of these mountains in your lifetime; now that's a bucket list! If you really want to add to the danger factor and get your name into the history books, you could be the first person to summit K2 in winter. You probably won't be successful, but what a way to go!
