Predicting the Weather – Old School!

dark clouds weather

One of the consistent realities of modern life is that weather prediction is at best an educated guess and hardly a science.

How many times have you heard the phrase “if the storm track just shifts 50 miles to the… it could be an entirely different story?”

Weather prediction today is a formulation of data, historical patterns, known behavior of weather components (fronts, jet stream, etc.) and the best guesses of those who are trained to read them with some degree of accuracy.

Now, though, imagine if all that gadgetry and predictions are no longer available.

Imagine you are back in the mid-1800's when often, severe weather was predictable only when it was miles away.

How did folks back then figure out what was over the next ridge weather-wise?

On the next page, we'll cover some basic adages regarding weather (that seem to be amazingly accurate).

Ummm…when my knees, back and finger joints start hurting….it’s going to rain and cool down. When my foot start hurting with all the above, it’s going to get really cold. Need anything else?! 🙂

Local knowledge is the key . Knowing the prevailing winds , predictable consistant weather patterns show up after several years living in the same place . Having a weather eye on the horizon becomes second nature when hiking / camping / cycle touring etc
