The “grid” here is not the one we usually associate with “off-grid.” It is referring to the IT grid – specifically, the Internet and other communications networks – places where even when you think you are anonymous, you probably are not.

Losing your identity online, however, is extremely difficult. We use credit cards, cell phones, social media, etc. and each one is traceable in terms of who we are and where we are located.

Anything you do over you cell or the Internet is able to be traced and usually pretty easily. That is why if you do want or need to go anonymous, you have to follow certain protocols.

Some are easy – delete your social media accounts and do not use them – others are really hard and still maintain any online presence or access.
