Successfully navigating in the wilderness requires a combination of savvy, knowledge and the proper tools to successfully identify North, South, East and West and to use that knowledge to plot your course.

While some possess a keen sense of “dead reckoning,” most people who get lost do not, do not have the proper tools to tell the direction they are heading or do not know how to use them.

In many cases, particularly if you do not spend much time in the outdoors, the issue is a lack of awareness of where they started and their surroundings.

A person can read a compass, for example, but has so clue which way to go to get to help or civilization.
