While every hiker, camper or survivalist has creature comforts they try and include in their wilderness gear, there are certain essentials every person who ventures beyond the asphalt jungle must have.

The list of critical gear is subjective, but there are a few basics. Without them, survival becomes at best, very uncomfortable and at worst, downright dangerous.

You must have a way to build a shelter, keep warm, store water, etc. in order to ensure that you can remain alive.

If you start out your packing with a few basics that you always take to the wilderness, you can add or subtract as you see fit, based on your anticipated circumstances. The key is to build upon that list of essentials and perfect it over time.
