When SHTF, the last thing you are going to want to worry about is where you are going and what you are bringing. That stuff should be figured out long before you ever have to worry about bugging out.
The same can be said for how you are going to get to your bug out location. It's safe to say that when chaos is raging throughout the city, whether due to a natural disaster or for something more sinister, the freeways will be clogged and the gas stations will be spent. That said, you aren't going to want to dilly-dally about your route.
Your bug out route should be as carefully laid out as the rest of your bug out plans; unless you have a good bug out route, you may not make it to your bug out location in the first place.
