Hardtack is a term not floated around much these days, but way back when it was one of the most common foods available anywhere, as it could last on the shelves almost indefinitely and was made quite simply and cheaply.

Although it was baked to the consistency of a brick (not even exaggerating a little bit) it did an excellent job of providing needed calories and stretching whatever foods were available so that at the end of the meal you could feel just a little bit fuller.

While the recipes for hardtack vary from source to source, some including shortening and others throwing in a source of protein, the most basic recipe is also the one that’s going to last on the shelf almost indefinitely.
