Keeping your mind active with creative thinking tasks is going to be critical when SHTF. It will keep you engaged and alert at all times (very important in a SHTF world) and allow you to find out of the box ways around common and uncommon problems to be found when the bubble bursts.

One big problem you may find yourself having to get around is not having adequate lighting when the sun goes down. It's a safe assessment that when SHTF there won't be very reliable power, if any, and the only lighting is going to come from flashlights, lanterns, or fires.

Flashlights are the most useful because you can turn them on and off in an instant and there's never the fear that you'll start a fire unintentionally.
