How To Make a Fire Hardened Spear

Sometimes people get confused by the concept of fire hardening. Some feel that if you opt for fire hardening, you're only going to modify the structure of the material you're burning. We understand why they might think this, but it's actually not true. The entire concept of fire hardening is to dry the wood. It's that simple.

Think of wood like a piece of bread. When you buy bread from the store, its soft and fluffy (if its fresh). If you were to drop a slice of bread in water, it would become soggy and soft – less durable – and more likely fall apart. But if you were to heat that bread, say in a toaster oven, it will turn into a piece of toast. Which is MUCH firmer than its former fluffy status. So using this analogy should make the concept of fire hardening a little easier to grasp.
