slab city

If you've ever heard of Slab City then you know it is known by many names, from the “Last Free Place in America,” to even a community of squatters.

Slab City is in the desert about 140 miles east of San Diego and was previously a military base called Camp Dunlap.

Right after WWII the military abandoned the camp but slabs of concrete still remained. They were later used for construction.

Many people live in Slab City and the people who visit wish to escape modern society as we know it.

Just 640 acres and completely off the grid, the community lives peacefully forgoing modern technology and any conveniences that go along with it.

There's a lot you can learn from a community like this, especially if you're a prepper hoping to live off the grid someday.

The Mesa is a tough place to live. It falls in between jurisdictions and you have go some 5 miles to get water. Hard place but those there are hardy if not crazy people. I’d go.
