The workings of a glow stick are fairly simple. It involves a chemical combination inside a plastic case and the illuminating effect is started by bending the stick.

At one time glow sticks were all the rage at carnivals, concerts, pool parties, the beach and birthday bashes … but now survivalist are finding the benefits of glow sticks to be insurmountable.

Glow sticks operate without battery or electricity, which is a huge convenience, and are non-toxic. They are a cheap form of temporary alternative lighting and out in the wild can be used rain or shine. The smaller sticks can even be used as canvass or tent ties.

Just remember, once the glow is activated it cannot be shut off. It will, off course, wear out or lesson in time (1 to 12 hours depending on the stick).
