SHTF usually only focuses on short-term survival situations where after the initial shock wears off, it's usually only days or perhaps only hours before the situation has passed.
However, not all SHTF situations are temporary. How can you really know for certain that when the grid goes down, it won't be permanent? You never know, a natural or man-made disaster could completely wipe out everything except for the men and women who survived in their bunkers.
The possibility of a long-term bug out situation is why survivalists put emphasis on knowing the skills on how to make essentials such as weapons and more specifically, gunpowder.
If a survivalist is smart, they will have already been stocking enough food to last them a long period, however, when it's all gone you will need your weapons to help you catch game. And when your ammunition runs out you're going to need to know how to make more of it.
After the break, learn how you can make gunpowder for a long-term survival situation and add this imperative skill to your skillset.

already know how
There will be plenty of rounds when the Un gets here.
This is why I train with edged weapons.. the more tools you know..
Eventually 50 years from now lol.
Doomsday will probably be because of the un.
Robert Rhodes
Lots of battlefield pick-ups
Became an archer and moved to within 160 miles from the best arrow trees on the planet.
I’ll have to read on that later
Justin Brown James Darby
WTF? Just how many people you planning on killing?
Not people. Food.
Jordan Howell
No I won’t lol
Been making my own black powder for over 25 years now. Good skill to know.
I was thinking most people that I know have enough ammo to last at least one generation.
Tag for later
Bow hunting sounds much easier lol

Gotta watch the original Star Trek program concerning the “Gorn”.
Practice other metods of getting meat. ie trapping, netting ect. Quieter, saves ammo and does whan your not there.
Use a bow if you can. And stock up on as much ammo as you can.

Okay, so how about primer?
Maybe some people that only have a few small boxes would run out. Many people have thousands of rounds and supplies to reload.
Now on the other hand, it would be extremely useful to learn how to make the Roman ballista, scorpion and onager.
Let us know your method. I would love to do that.
Eric Summars
As many as it takes
Here’s and idea get really good using a blade or a combination of blades
Making powder is not the issue.. you cannot make the primers
I just use the old Lazer rifle.
Black powder and s muzzleloader, flint lock. Bow and arrows. You may have thousands of rounds and dozens of magazines and stripper clips, but how much can you carry?
Arrows cost more. You can’t always go get them back.
Epic loots?

^best answer I’ve ever seen! Lol!
Eventually everything runs out. This is that condom type situation. Better to have the knowledge and not need it than need it and not have it.
I have run across the items you requested. I too wanted to learn how to build a ballista.
So we learn how to make all the archery components.
Ron Burger I just use the commonly published(now)recipe of 75/25/15 volume. I use soft wood charcoal ,willow that I make in a small steel barrel. Saltpetre and sulphur both from stores that sell canning supplies. Of course I crush all separately, and mix them damp .I like to do this on a humid day,it’s how I was taught. I dampen each Ingredient separately then mix . I use wooden bowls and spoons. To dry it I spread it on a large plastic tray placed outside under a shaded porch roof. It goes in my shop at night. I do this in the summer if I can. I also make small 2 lb batches . I break it up when dry thru a plastic strainer. Now I only shoot smoothbores of 20 gauge and larger , cannons, and some very large bore rifles 75/85 calibre. I use a plastic window screen to remove dust that can raise pressures quickly. The only thing I do different than most is I don’t use water to mix it. I use stale concentrated urine.,my own. Now most of you just stopped reading and I understand that. But I keep a 5 gallon plastic bucket and lid in a distant shed,I live in the boonies. I use the bucket for urine and leave the lid loosely over it so tidy can evaporate. I work with dust mask and not rule gloves to mix for sanitary reasons. Now you will have no problem with telling if the urine is concentrated, dark yellow and very strong smelling. And always work out doors. The stale urine raises the salt petre levels and make the powder stronger. Just a few years back all saltpetre was made from human and animal body wastes . Hope this helps
Link Dobbs I’ll probably end up using my recurve, but I do like my compound I just picked up
Paul Lankford
All 3 would be very useful.
As for the ammo, yes eventually. I have seen collections that would a Remington warehouse to shame. It would take many decades of a lot of shooting to use it all.
The onager has many uses if you think about it. The ballista and scorpion are line of sight. The onager can overcome that obstacle.
Gunpowder is the easy part the primers are the difficult part
I have plenty
doomsday is any day a right winger decides Jesus told him to blow some of the rest of us away.
Watch the news lib, it’s not us you have to worry about, it’s your fellow goofs. And Jesus didn’t want you dead he wants you to live forever in his kingdom.Try picking up a book once and awhile, may I suggest the Bible.
Thanks for the virus !!!!!
I was thinking that when you said you dampened it with concentrated urine, concentrate enough of it and there’s your saltpeter 🙂
Yeah it’s a bit misleading. primers are easy and take up the least space for storage. While Homemade black powder will work for your average fire stick, Perfectly milled ball or stick smokeless powder is out of the realm of most and will not provide the level of consistency and performance we are used to. Most modern autos would be a bigger hassle than your average hawkin if that was the only powder available… Hopefully when I run out of ammo I’ll be long gone 🙂
I’ll run out of guns first…
Better figure out how to make primers first.
