The concept of a Faraday Cage is to provide an enclave of metal or metal mesh to block the electric fields created by a solar event or by a manmade pulse event, such as a nuclear detonation.

Faraday cages are not foolproof and do have vulnerabilities that can be exploited, but the concept behind them is to provide a wall of protection for your electronic devices if you are ever subjected to an EMP.
