Pellet guns, along with airsoft guns and BB guns, are where young shooters and outdoorsmen usually begin. They are after all easy to use, inexpensive, and remarkably durable.
As shooters age, then tend to abandon these guns and focus on larger calibers for hunting and sport at the range. It's a skill many survivalists pride themselves on — being able to handle a variety of guns so they can handle a variety of SHTF situations in the future.
However, during the collapse, a humble pellet gun may once again become a useful weapon for many preppers as they will likely depend on this small-caliber weapon to help them get food.
You might be wondering why you would rely on a pellet gun when you can purchase powerful weapons, am I right?
After the break, check out four convincing reasons why you should hold onto that old pellet gun. It may just be the solution to many of your survival needs!

Not meant to be for defense, great for small game
Very nice Ryan Thomason, but you misspelled our last name! Lol
Crossman storm XT with after market spring 1300 F.P.S. 3-9×32 scope and RWS DIANA P5 magnum kept in my bug out box
Jim has one….just to get rid of pests. Hasn’t used it in y ye ars.
Faster is just better.
yep, there good to have. ammo is cheap, easy to get and you can take out birds and small animals
They shoot bamboo skewers really good to. I’ve shot one through a 3/8″s piece of plywood.
I like it
Tiffiny Friesen
No not always, a high velocity round has less of a hydraulic shockwave
Got mine!
Yep, they got 9mm pellats and larger. It takes alot of air thrust to push those fat chunks of lead.
When shooting pidgeon sized birds you will need hollow point pellets to drop them. The pointed target pellets travel straight through. It really makes a differance.
The Airforce inc. “Texan” is a .45 air rifle that can take deer. You can google it for info.
When choosing a air rifle, use common sense, and don’t try to save cents. There are many out there. There is compression spring and nitro compression. Both have the strengths and weaknesses. Compression springs after a lot of use, lose strength, springs can break. Nitro compression uses a gas piston, if the rifle is cleaned and maintained , it will last longer, and a side note, they are smoother and quieter than spring. Some rifles in this category, are loud, if they are pushing pellets at 1,000-1,400 fps, most will sound like a 22 when fired. I have one made by Crossman, looks like a full length and weight M16, with a BSA aim point. It sounds like 22 when shot, it is a break barrel with a nitro piston. I tuned the red dot sight to red-fire alloy pellets, and at 80 feet will pass the same hole as the first shot, and at 75 yards can group quarter coin sized groups.
There are even air guns that have permanent attached sound suppressors, that turn the “crack” sound, to a quiet spit sound. When stealth is needed these are great.
Just keep it mind, if the ride is scoped, tune it to a specific pellet, weight, brand, and type of point. Not all pellets fire the same. Stick with the common calibers, .177 or .22, if the chtf, those exotic off calibers will not be everywhere like the common ones. Spend some money, and buy 10-12 boxes/containers of pellets, same kind, and put them away in a cool dry place. But first, try 3-4-5 different types to see how they shoot, pick the one that suits you.
*not all gun oils are the same, some are solvent based, and will destroy the inner sesls, and then your investment is trash. *hippies in a jar or spray is fine for the outside exterior, hinge points, triggers, use it sparingly, ..for inner oiling use “PEL-GUN OIL” it will protect the seals.
Thank you for your time, and enjoy your sir gunning, hope this helped.
I’ve seen some that fire a 44 caliber bullet at 900 fps. They charge with a hand pump or SCUBA tank. Wish I could remember who made them.
I show mine today, real nice and powerful to, right on target..
I use mine to harvest squirrels for the gumbo pot.
I been changing over to pellet rifles have a springer and a nitro, next is a pcp, they are worth it but make sure you are willing to spend time sighting them in with a good air rifle scope!
How quiet is it, honestly?
James M Running Wind my model is pretty quiet. Report is less than a .22 subsonic rpund. They make a few models with a type of suppression can on end of barrel.
Gamo 1000 yard range shoot polymer tip pellets.
Polymer tip pellets.
I was looking at the new design, Gamo Whisper Fusion , in .177. But the $250 price tag makes you wait and save up.
I family friend said that this model was test fired in the store in the back room/range, and the sound made, it resembled muffled snap.
The pellet rifle is my favorite rifle!

Airforce Texan is great.but don’t expect to knock large game down unless you can get a brain shot.it will kill large game but plan on tracking it.
I’m a Christian, but what has this got to do with air rifle’s?

Edgar Rodriguez Jorge Arciga
Even Louis and Clark had air rifles
Arume u saying use crucified jesus as target practice

I still have mine
Lol same reasons you would want a bow id take a bow especially a recurve bow over an air rifle any day.
harassment done properly is just plain fun…
Can be ‘enhanced’ with a wider selection of ammunition…a finish nail will work for better penetration, tip it with whatever you like… 😉
1200psi Gamo already done.
I’d like a crossbow
A nail gun would work, too,
a woman shot and killed my malamute with a high powered bb gun…..the sheriffs dept was amazed when they did the autopsy….they were expecting a 22 that killed him since it went through his thick fur…..nope….she had pumped it to the max and one went into his heart and another into his liver….
I have a pellet gun also a bow I love to shoot my bow but a lot more expensive when you lose an Arrow plus the pellet gun I have is stronger than any I’ve seen you only caught one time and you can shoot through I can
What pellet gun do you have Larry Knight? I was unimpressed with mine maybe I chose the wrong brand.
Iron sights or scope?
I found mine at all places a to show that travels around it was about $70 it’s a Chinese made heavy as a regular weapon when a police officer friend came over and saw it he thought it was an AK at first
A wrist rocket will do the same thing and you never run out of ammunition!”
when yer wife doesent bring yer beer right away or make you a sammich when you want her two you can use a pellet gun as a gental reminder without sendng her all the way to the doc. It’s a cheep efective way to train yer wife so that maybe some day she could ride with the dog and you in the cab.
