Pellet guns, along with airsoft guns and BB guns, are where young shooters and outdoorsmen usually begin. They are after all easy to use, inexpensive, and remarkably durable.

As shooters age, then tend to abandon these guns and focus on larger calibers for hunting and sport at the range. It's a skill many survivalists pride themselves on — being able to handle a variety of guns so they can handle a variety of SHTF situations in the future.

However, during the collapse, a humble pellet gun may once again become a useful weapon for many preppers as they will likely depend on this small-caliber weapon to help them get food.

You might be wondering why you would rely on a pellet gun when you can purchase powerful weapons, am I right?

After the break, check out four convincing reasons why you should hold onto that old pellet gun. It may just be the solution to many of your survival needs!

Most air pistols don’t develop enough power to kill small game. Air rifles fare better. I’d recommend 1,000 fps.

Ok why is everyone going on about 1000fps and above not killing small game. In the uk we are limited to 12ft/lb mussel energy. @.22 cal that’s about 550fps on a medium weight pellet. If you can shoot properly this will kill a large rabbit out at 60 yards easy.

I have a powermaster 66 variable pump bb/pellet rifle. It’s shoots bbs around 680fps and it is more than adequate enough to take out rabbits, squirells, raccoons, and with a well placed shot even coyotes. Don’t underestimate the killing power of an inexpensive air rifle.

I prefer my .177 crossman over my .22 more punch and much cheaper ammo

..did you just say you’re gonna try and kill a coyote with a BB at 680/fps?

I got a Gamo Big Cat .22cal air rifle. Depending on what type pellet I shoot get 900to 1000fps. Will easily kill squirrels and small rabbits. Took out a large possum over 15lbs with a well aced head shot. Excellent pepper essential.

I put a pellet through a stop sign with mine. I bet I could fill a stew pot.

May I add the 12ft/lb limit is for unlicensed firearms once over 12ft/lb it becomes a licensed firearm category 1

The air rifle was the most popular trade item to the Indians on the Louis and Clark expedition

I’ve noticed a lot of bad$#%&!@*pellet guns on the market up to 1,300 fps for around $150 a pop.

I read an article about L&Cs serious air rifle. You’d think someone would market one larger than 22 cal.

  15. Jon Parker said:

This is like the people who say they can drop a deer with a .22LR.
It’s fucking inhumane, it WON’T drop the animal with one shot, and it’s just..dumb.

  16. Joseph Perretta said:

And yes it will take down a coyote. A pellet in the temple will put it down. If your trying to survive and an opportunity for a meal presents itself it’s good to know what is possible.

Joseph Perretta, I ain’t laughing I believe u 100%. 22 to the head will kill a deer. Number 1 poaching rifle 22. So this guy ain’t missing it.further more a powerful pellet rifle and the right distance with a head shot will kill a cyote. They kill hogs with gamo 22 cal air rifle at 1000 fps so yrs air rifles and 22 are capable of taken animals of bigger sizes. Just at certain distances.
