Colored smoke has a lot of applications – in pyrotechnics, special effects and believe it or not, in a survival situation.

As a signal, in a survival situation, colored smoke stands out and can be seen for miles. Right now, it is used in some military situations to help air support target the enemy and to identify friendly forces.

In a survival situation, particularly if you are alone in the wilderness, colored smoke can alert rescuers as to your position, particularly if they are using air support.

Best of all, you can make it yourself and store it with your survival kit or bug-out bag, for use when you need it.

Using basic chemistry, you can mix components and create your own colored smoke system and because it is in powder form, you can store it in a plastic bag or Tupperware container, almost indefinitely.
