After Doomsday a Prepper Will Eventually Run Out of Ammo. Here’s How to Make Gunpowder the Old Fashioned Way.

Gunpowder

SHTF normally mainly focuses on short-term survival situations where after you're done feeling shocked, it's usually only days or hours before the before the situation is over.

However, not all collapses are temporary. How can a prepper know for certain that when the collapse takes place that it isn't permanent? You never know, a man-made or natural disaster could wipe out everything except for the people who have survived it thanks to their sturdy bunkers.

The potential of a long-term bug out situation is why preppers believe it's so important to understand the skills on how to make essential items such as weapons and specifically, gunpowder.

If a prepper is wise, they will have already been stocking up food to last them a while, however, when it's all used it they will need weapons to help them catch food. When ammunition is gone it's important to know how to make more of it.

On the next page, check out step-by-step instructions on how to make gunpowder for a long-term SHTF situation and add this essential skill to your survival expertise.

This is why you will not last if SHTF. You lack knowledge and have posted it to prove it.

Thats why you have a good shotgun stock up on cheap primers say 10000 and you can make a propellant and pretty much stuff a shotgun shell with whatever you want and make a wad out of anything suitable. I bought a portable single shot loader and it does it all.

They have hand pumps ..ya ok it feels like dial a heart attack but it is an option and a Gamo .22 can take small game and they are break barrel spring piston. Don’t laugh off an air rifle look into them. It would surprise you. I have hunted squirll with Crosman 1377 (10 pump).

Muzzle loaders, PCP air rifles that would still very much in play. They even make a new shotgun one that’s decent for dove hunting writhing 25 yards.

Or take it from you! Your high hopes of the human heart are cute! But those who have weapons will freely take from those that don’t!

Read the Anochists Handbook for home made napalm , thermite , black powder etc . Illegal to use BUT not illegal to own . In a SHTF situation this will be used

Sorry to say it but William is right. Take for instance a man with his kid both starving the death. He has a gun u dont and you have good to feed his kid. He will do anything to get it. However some of us might be stable enough to be normal and trade.

Exactly knives are for when run out of bullets or need to be quite. I got around 2,000 rounds per gun that should keep me busy for a while

How many battles do preppers expect to be in, which would require more than a standard basic load?

actually you’re fairly safe using blackpowder in a modern cartridge.IF you pick the right cartridge. i’

Personally I’d do this and use it with a traditional Kentucky rifle for hunting and try to avoid using the traditional ammo, but their are several books on the market you can get that demonstrate how to make both black powder and smokeless powder so there are options

Pretty sure Hickok45 did black powder 9mm in a glock a while back. It’s possible to run it in semi autos it’s just not the cleanest

Primers are not easy to make…that is the hardest component next to proper brass..

Just a point on this, unless you’re using your family like a squad of Marines, you probably are not going to run out of ammo if you stored a sufficient amount. 1 hunting rifle on battle rifle one shot gun one 22LR One pistol per person in your group, 2000 rounds for the battle rifle the 22 LR and 500 rounds for everything else per person will see you through anything short of a Mad Max type scenario.

Just remember, you just advertised to the world that you have a fridge full of gun powder.

damn! wrong button again! I’d suggest that any of the older types designed, or derived from,a powder design would work quite well. 44.40 /38.40 or 44 magnum should be fine. one can study up on loads. the original .44 Henry took 28 grains of powder from memory. The later .44.40 took, obviously, 40 grains of powder. Of about FFFG size. There are many blackpowder reloading manuals and a copy of Barnes Cartridges of the World will be usefull also. i’d be dubious about black powder in a .223 or most modern bottle necked cartridges but I’ve seen no data on using black powder in them. a greater problem will be getting primers so I’d suggest acquiring a .45 or .50 cal rifle and smooth bore musket with a flintlock firing system as caplocks, despite the small size of primers or percussion caps, will eventually have the same problems as reloading a centrefire. no more caps! I’d also suggest learing how to use a bow and arrow. At least for hunting purposes. also learning how to make them. I recommenth a 4 volume work, The Traditional Bowyers Bible. it covers all aspects of bow and arrow making, even using neolithic tools. Actually the bow isn’t so much the problem as getting straight arrow shafts. A lso Olsen’s book Out Door survival covers many aspects of general survival, though it is tuned more to north America than elsewhere it is an aexcellent work.

Ammo has parts. One of those parts are primers. With out it the ammo is just junk. Not to mention the type of powder is wrong for most modern guns.

Just gonna throw this out there. Your average prepper is most likely not going to survive to the point of ammunition exhaustion. If you are in enough gun battles to run through all of your stockpile, chances are you will have long since been killed. If you are a good enough hunter to survive while everyone else is trying to do the same. 1 round of ammo will be enough to feed you and your family for up to a month. So lets just average that out. 1-4 rounds per month to feed the fam is 12-48 rds per year. The average lifespan of a person before modern medicine was 40-50 years. So in a full 50 years a man could expect to shoot 2000 rds at game. Of course there is fishing and foraging. My point however is if you are one of the truly bad asses who survived the expenditure of say a stockpile of 5000rds, chances are your badassery has left you with a wealth of confiscated ammo and meat. Not saying that knowledge isn’t important, but the thought that we are all going to run out of ammo in a SHTF situation is silly. Wow I need more hobbies.

U tube has videos of people using air rifles in hunting and worth looking at… Yes many areas have rules on hunting but in SHTF who is going to enforce them. My point is you will be surprised what an air rifle can do when they are not Walmart specials.

I have a compound bow and a cross bow, when ammo runs out arrows are easily made so let it rip and let’s get it over with.

5000 rounds packed away and not planning to fight any epic battles so Im pretty sure I wont run out of ammo. Keep hidden and dont fire unless absolutely necessary. This will ensure not only your survival but conservation of your ammo/supplies.

holy$#%&!@*. I managed to fit that into ONE post/page. If only the fucktard how made this stupid post could do that same. Amazing he/she can fit 700000000 ads into one page but cant fit a few lines of text into one page. In a prolonged survival situation, gunpowder could very well be the difference between eating meat and gaining valuable protein or doing without. However, it’s up to you to find the correct ingredients to make the gunpowder you need to survive.
In an apocalyptic scenario however, making black powder is the easy part. What would be really challenging is attaining these ingredients in the first place. Charcoal would be the easiest, since it’s fairly easy to make on your own. Willow, soft pine, western cedar, and cottonwood trees are most commonly used for making black powder.
Sulfur is bit trickier. Depending on where you live, you may or may not be able to get a hold of it in a grid down scenario. Fortunately black powder can still be made without sulfur. Simply mix the potassium nitrate and charcoal together with a 80/20 ratio. It won’t burn as well, but it will still work. Sulfur can also be substituted with iron-oxide (rust).
After the break, learn how you can find potassium nitrate and how it was traditionally made back in the day. This could be the key to creating the gunpowder you’ll need when SHTF!
Even though potassium nitrate can be challenging to make, if you follow the “French method” you should be able to make it work. With just a few key ingredients you can create a mixture to create gunpowder that’ll later help you stockpile ammo when you need it the most. Luckily there are other methods as well to make gunpowder too, so keep reading.
Your most challenging obstacle will be finding the potassium nitrate. The only natural source of this material can be found in bat guano, and I’m willing to bet that you won’t have an easy time finding that. You’ll have to make your own.
Traditionally this was done by what’s called the “French method.” You have to mix urine, manure, and straw together. Periodically, more urine is added and mixed over and over again over the course of several months to a year. Then water is poured through the mixture and filtered through wood ash, causing potassium nitrate crystals to appear, where they can then be separated.
Next, learn about a more modern method to creating gun power that involves a metal drum. This method may be preferable depending on what you can create the quickest (and not to mention what ingredients you decide to stockpile ahead of time) for when SHTF.
Remember, eventually, all but the most prepared survivalists will run out of manufactured ammunition and knowing how to make your own gunpowder goes a long way towards ensuring you can get the game you need. Learn how to make gunpowder now so that you’ll already know what to do during a long-term survival situation. This is just another survival skill to learn to ensure your survival when doomsday arrives.
A more modern method involves a metal drum with a drainage valve near the bottom. A screen mesh is placed inside, and manure, water, and urine is dumped in and mixed on top of the mesh.
You seal it up tight and let it sit outside for 10 months. Then you drain the liquid into a wood ash filter, and let it set in a shallow, wooden or plastic container to dry. Once the water dries, potassium nitrate crystals will remain.
These aren’t the only methods though. There are countless more, so it would be a good idea to do some research and find something that works best for you. The Army’s Improvised Munitions Handbook has a recipe for making potassium nitrate that is a lot faster than what I explained above, and it also contains its own procedure for making black powder.
Making your own gunpowder is not something most of us will ever have to do.
In a prolonged survival situation, though, we may have no choice if we want to eat game, so knowing how is one skill that might very well come in handy.

Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese Soldier who came out of the Phillips jungle, had a lot less ammo then a lot of people have stockpiled. It was figured that he went through 16 rounds s year of his ammo. He still had several years supply of ammo when he gave up in 1974.
