charcoal

Activated Carbon is charcoal that has been treated to increase its absorption properties.

It is used in virtually every home in North America in some form and has many industrial, home and medical and environmental purposes.

Those include removing organic impurities in plating processes (industrial,) treating some poisonings and overdoses (medical) and as an absorption agent for cleaning up various spills as well as reducing water and air pollution from industrial sites.

In your home, activated charcoal is used as an air purifier in air conditioners and furnaces and as part of the most water filtration equipment.

From a survival perspective, activated charcoal has a wide variety of uses, including purifying water and air and you can improvise it to use in a makeshift gas mask if necessary.
