Insects are all around us, no matter where you go on earth; even Antartica has one native insect, the Belgica antarctica, or Antarctic midge.
For the most part, though, insects are harmless and at worst, a nuisance, but nothing more.
There are, however, thousands of insects that pose a threat, can do real damage to and even kill human beings.
Some have the potential to transfer parasites, bacteria, and viruses to a human host via a bite.
Others can transfer poison that numbs, irritates, dissolves, emulsifies and even burns human flesh; luckily, most of these live in regions of the world that most of us will never visit.
Still others, like the locusts,or grasshoppers, pose a threat in the form of swarms and crop destruction.
