After just about any natural disaster, one reality is that there will be a lot of damaged and abandoned vehicles due to the severity of the aftermath.
But even if a car is abandoned, vehicles can provide a ton of survival materials, tools, and supplies that a prepper can use during the aftermath.
It's first important to make sure the car is truly abandoned — don't start re-purposing a vehicle only to have an upset owner confront you.
Once you have established the car is abandoned, however, there is an endless amount of supplies you can utilize for survival purposes.
Some of these items include mirrors, hoses, and more contents that most owners leave because they're in such a hurry. However, you can use these supplies to your advantage and add them to your Doomsday stash.
To see an incredible list of survival supplies and parts you can salvage from an abandoned car, check out the following slides.

Don’t forget the acid and lead from the battery when it’s all used up.
Only sealed lead acid batteries can be salvaged. Ventilated ones, although already Jurassic, are still used in some countries. It will take at least a day for it to be completely rendered 20% usable. If drained immediately, cleaned and replenished with distilled water, there is a good chance it can still provide power for lighting and charging purposes.
Man let’s not jump the gun here lol
Your a complete idiot if your out scavenging car parts when SHTF or BUGOUT TIME.
They left a ton out. I would rip the winsheild, rear windo, and squaring Windows otherwise out for greenhouse if close to base, the alternator, belts, Pullies, and fan to gear out to help replenish the battery, extra seating, but only if close to permanant “base of operations” otherwise some may be handy, but if traveling is in the forecast, none of it would be worthwhile to lug around really.
No reason to have to click page after page , click bait bullshit
“Whatever is in the Trunk”
“Whatever is in the Glove Box or Center Console”
Great list, guys.
You forgot the car door.
If it gets hot, you can roll the window down.
Haha.
What about the air bags? There is a small amount of explosive and a blasting cap.
I’m gonna grab all the loose change for vending machines and pinball
Other ideas:
Rubber tread from the tires for when you wear your shoes through
Automatic transmission fluid is great gun oil
If they have a phone charger, you can use that with other vehicles to charge small electronics from 12v sources
Learned that last one years ago watching Mad Max the Road Warrior.
I can reuse and repurpose just about every piece on a car for survival in shtf.
Seat covers and upholstery make good backpacks
Any kind of clean tubing, for retrieving water from pipes, and sprinklers.
Whatever is in the Trunk – The first thing you should check is the trunk. Many people keep tools, flashlights, jumper cables, blankets, and even extra clothing in the trunk. Most people who abandon their vehicles would probably try to take some of those things with them, but not necessarily. If you check a hundred vehicles, you’re bound to come across some goodies.
Whatever is in the Glove Box or Center Console – Here you might find food, lighters, first aid supplies, papers you can use to help start fires, etc. Again, you never know, so if you’re walking down a highway full of abandoned cars, check as many glove boxes and center consoles as you can.
Mirrors – Now that the obvious stuff is out of the way, the first thing you should consider taking is the rearview mirror. If it’s stuck on the glass with adhesive, you might be able to remove it with a razor blade. Otherwise, you could just break it off. To get the side mirrors out, you’ll need a knife or similar object. Mirrors can be used for many things including signaling for help and starting fires.
Seat Belts – If you don’t have any cordage, use the seat belts. Just extend them as far as they will go and cut them out. If you need a cord that’s not as thick, just cut up the seat belt into smaller strands. If you unravel them enough, you could even use them as fishing line.
Battery – You can use a car battery to keep your devices charged during an emergency. But to do this, you’ll also need some 12v receptacles and a power inverter.
Wiring – The wires in the engine could be used as cordage for any number of things such as constructing shelters, making snares, bundling things together so they’re easier to carry, etc.
Gasoline – As long as you have a siphon of some kind, you could use leftover gasoline for your own vehicle. Gas could also be used to get a fire going, as long as you’re very careful. Don’t puncture a fuel tank for gas as even a small spark is enough to make a gas tank explode, even if very little fuel is present.
I can find a lot more than 7!
That’s a pretty good idea about the rubber for shoes. And I guess transmission fluid would work as a gun cleaning lubricant. Also the seats from the cars may come in handy to could use them to sit in or rip ourmt stuffing to make and insulated coat or whatever.
No doubt..
Grant Cunningham is of the opinion that ATF is actually one of the best gun lubes available.
I cannot believe the battery is not in this. Lead can be melted down for shot.
Alternators, pulleys, batteries, wiring, radios, oils, fuels…. I stocked up on parts over the years and have 3 of the most needed wearing parts.
Who comes up with this$#%&!@*i can only figure its someone behind a computer and not a hands on kind of person you can use pretty much anything you can find for something
i’ll be busy eating people
Terminus had it figured out
The best oil to use for a gun is the oil you have.
Lead from wheels i love making bullets from those
Air filter
waste of time, all common sense
Um… Especially when there is little fuel in it
When it’s all used up the acid is for the most part a coating, or crystals on the lead plates. There may be some residual acid left in what should have been 100 percent distilled water, but not too much I would think if it’s initial specific gravity was correct. I have been keeping non usable batteries for some time for lead salvage. Great idea.
Trunk lid or front hood makes a great sled for hauling supplies across soft terrain like swampy or snow or grass that is otherwise difficult for a person to carry materials
Floor mats, so you have something to wipe your feet on before entering your shelter 😀
Kelli Smith Floyd
Alternator battery gas
Vibrators
Car batteries are a must for electricity
Seat belts, to use for lashing or making rope, rear view mirrors for signaling
Battery lead is extremely toxic , unless very desperate I don’t reccomend it
Alot of the new wheel weights are no longer lead , and with the fancy factory wheel now they are glued on
True but it’s worth throwing out there
Here’s the thing people you can scavenge all kinds of material from just about anywhere IF you know how and what. Use common sense think outside the box keep a constant eye open for need items. You need to become a backyard Mr. Fixit , a handy Leatherman and or pocket tool with you all the time. Simple saves lives
Plain and simple, common sense to
It is on the list
This is dependent if you need water or food. If you got that covered well enough then sure but if not, the front seats and back seats should be first as if they had more than they could carry they would have left it behind there
Their are A lot more then only seven things that are useful in a car.
Don’t forget to check the sun visor for the ignition key…..could be taking thee entire car!!! 🙂
Look in the trunk…..seriously….
Thats a tip??
If you have to be told to look in the trunk your not gonna last to long
Mine will still run
Maybe the radio?
