Packing a tent into your bug out bag is, generally, recommended. Many people will shirk away from the idea in the interest of weight, but if your vehicle breaks down or gets stuck you may soon find yourself walking.

You may be thinking “Yeah, that's exactly why I want to save weight.” Well, after a few days of sleeping without shelter, you'll likely be singing a different tune.

If, however, you do decide to forgo carrying a proper shelter, or if you find yourself stranded on a hiking trip in which you had no plans to go camping, you will very likely need to construct for yourself a quality temporary shelter to keep out the wind, rain, and chill.
