The frontiersmen and women who came out west in the 1800's were no doubt extraordinary survivalists. They taught themselves how to do things that were beneficial to their survival and used their invaluable skill set throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to survive.
During this time period cowboys owned very little. When they needed something they either had to make it or make use of what they had. Stores were miles away and when they did make their monthly store visit they had to think about what they truly needed since many were barely making by. Often, they had to learn the skills to accomplish what they needed to get done without spending frivolously.
These brave men and women traveled out west to make a name for themselves, and often they had no idea what dangers they would face.
They were forced to be physically and mentally strong for whatever came their way. Experiencing drought, starvation, illness, or even deaths in their family — they had to stay strong and do the best they could despite the cards they were dealt.
