5 Primitive Shelters That’ll Keep Survivalists Safe From the Elements When the Collapse Is Here

primitive shelters

It's challenging knowing what type of shelter to build when you're in need of one. So much depends on your existing conditions, building materials, and the tools you have with you.

It's important to consider whether it's safe enough to search for materials before constructing your shelter.

But you also need to take the weather and climate into consideration — will a mud hut keep you safe from the rain? Probably not. Will you be wasting precious time looking for grass to thatch your roof if you're currently stuck in the snow?

And what else is there to build with? These are all vital questions you should ask yourself prior to making a shelter. Most of the time building a shelter will be about improvising, and remembering which shelters are the easiest to make depending on the SHTF situation at hand.

One of the best tools you can carry is knowledge. Knowing your options ahead of time, based on your surroundings is the key to surviving. Check out the slides for some excellent examples of primitive shelters!

In the (original) Field and Stream article, they were man enough to fit it all on one page. What happened to you?

    Oh don’t worry
The government made concentration camps for us across to United States.

Randall Kirkham In this case I don’t see the need. Under no circumstances is housing going to disappear from the earth. If you get burned out by rioting crowds, then guess what, you probably have neighbors OR RELATIVES that haven’t been burned out. Learning how to build “dugouts” is a stupid waste of time, unless of course you intend to traverse Alaska during the winter for shits and grins.

Daffyd Ab Hugh Its stupid to believe that all housing will disappear. Tell me, what tragedy would make all housing disappear so that you need to build a dugout? Tell me, why can’t you sleep in your car or van like so many Americans do already. Will they completely disappear as well?

The only thing that will disappear is my mortgage and that’s a maybe. If you want to be prepared learn how to work for a living. Carpentry, blacksmith, stone mason, learn how to broke or shod a horse, learn how to generate electricity. Become an important and productive citizen in your community.

This is Click-Bait. There’s no reason not to put all of this on one page, other than to sell advertising.

You’re more able to care for others when you can the care of yourself. If you get caught in a sticky situation, knowing how to make a proper shelter, and acquire food is taking care of others.

Quenten Klarner Very well stated. When I wrote this, there were many people with a F everyone else attitude posting. Your words are wise and I appreciate them immensely.

Yes, among the overly violent looters and standing gangs. You there are unoccupied areas. You don’t stay in the city, but you’re an idiot if you’re walking right up to another building to make your shelter.

  11. Quenten Klarner said:

Well, you can try and get cost with looters and gangs that will take advantage of disasters.

They got the debris hit wrong, it’s more like the a-frame with lots of debris piled on and a cushion of debris below. If you follow their instructions what you make will just collapse on you.

Or… a violent take over of your local COSTCO.

Once you have secured the store survival is easy.

Why would anyone want to live like that? I would think that would be a time to think about the hereafter.

Hey chicken little…..watch any television lately. You can scoff at those who prepare for a disaster….but have you ever watched how quickly the shelves at the grocery empty at the mere mention of a storm? Or how difficult it might be should rioting be taking place to get food? It might not be a big thing to you now, but let a crisis, man made or mother nature occur and you might re-think being prepared is only for crazys.

I think it must have nailed you…. But then you put your total faith in the Hillary camp that they will take care of you. You might want to talk to flood victims in Iowa, or Louisiana, or storm victims in Ohio…..about how quickly those soup trucks arrive. Good luck to you….I am sure they will put you on the top of their list of priorities.

  28. Gary Decker said:

You answered your own question….my grandparents prepared for hard times…they prepared for winters by canning and storing away their food. They didn’t wait for the nacho cheese to arrive and their foodstamps to be delivered.

I remember the gas station jacking the price of gas . There was a line around the block ,days later the price fell . I remember when people paniced and anti-freeze tripled in price . Your mind is your biggest fear
