It's challenging knowing what type of shelter to build when you're in need of one. So much depends on your existing conditions, building materials, and the tools you have with you.
It's important to consider whether it's safe enough to search for materials before constructing your shelter.
But you also need to take the weather and climate into consideration — will a mud hut keep you safe from the rain? Probably not. Will you be wasting precious time looking for grass to thatch your roof if you're currently stuck in the snow?
And what else is there to build with? These are all vital questions you should ask yourself prior to making a shelter. Most of the time building a shelter will be about improvising, and remembering which shelters are the easiest to make depending on the SHTF situation at hand.
One of the best tools you can carry is knowledge. Knowing your options ahead of time, based on your surroundings is the key to surviving. Check out the slides for some excellent examples of primitive shelters!

Good come back! You make that up by yourself? Wow!
I did.
I’ve had a lot of practice dealing with your kind.
You assume to know anything about me.. as far as you know, I could have a bunker in my backyard and I’m just making fun of you because I know how to press your buttons. Just let it go man. It’s social media. Have a laugh at yourself every now and then
I have a shelter; it’s called MY HOUSE.
Amen bro. I say that all we have to do is remember that we’re a civilized country and we are civilized men.

See i gotta go with number 5. We would definitely have something to dig with and would be able to dig down however far we wanted
I like the one on the right !
Every civilization eventually collapses, just open a history book…it’s happened before, it will happen again…it’s just how it goes…doesn’t mean it’s the end though, just the beginning of the next civilization…
Ian Porter do you know why your grandmother kept plastic covers on her couch? Because she was a squirter……..
Are you 12?
Buy sandbags. Lots of sandbags. Practice filling them. If you are really motivated find some hesco barriers
That is why I get real books not downloaded ones. The batteries never run out on a book.

If society collapses there will be tons of available homes to occupy.
Right! Society collapses and everyone all the sudden goes down to the city park and builds a hole in the ground. Hahaha
Stop spreading your fear.
Thank you.
The prepper$#%&!@* all it is is a multimillion dollar business. It’s like when Obama buys a lot of stocks in ammunition and needs to sell it quick, all he has to do is say that he’s going to pass a law to ban it and everyone runs to Walmart and makes him richer.
if you has so little confidence in the united states, might i suggest you consider crossing either the border to the north or south and gtfo.

Learning a few necessary survival skills that could save your life or the lives of those around you isn’t paranoia. It’s common sense. Skills that would come in handy during a prolonged power outage due to a natural disaster, getting lost while hiking, boat overturning on a river trip, and countless other scenarios. I’ve never been in a house fire, but I’ve learned the basics of escaping a burning building. I’ve never had to use cpr, but I’ve taken the time to learn it. Not out of irrational fear, but because of the poncho rule: it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Granted, if you’re spending a good chunk of your paycheck on prepping and running drills every week, you’re probably taking things a bit too far.
Every single one of these posts have a ton of people bitching.. why not just read, nod your head and say, “interesting” and go on with your lives. Lol

Lol
Well when if$#%&!@*actually does ever hit that fan the problem may well be finding materials to build with…..
Go and stand at primary school gate at pickup time and watch most of the mothers. Then go and study economics for about 5 mins. See if you still have that opinion that we arent going to keep doing stupid$#%&!@*until we$#%&!@*absolutely everything.

Ian. Stop being such an$#%&!@*
The thing about it Ian Porter, as great as all of it sounds. It sounds like a miracle, sure if we all banded together to change the world it could probably happen. But how is that going to happen. What kind of event would have to happen for the entire planet to work together. Or even to get a country to work together. In the history of the US do you know the times are country was the lost United?! After WWI WWII and Vietnam. The only times are country has ever really United is after a great tragedy. Every other year in American history has been filled with selfishness, greed, and everyone looking out for #1. Sure there are good and bad people. Probably more good then bad. But most of the bad people are rush and powerful.
And all the people who want to change the world are poor, helpless, and work 40hrs a week and have to worry about rent. And in other countries it’s either a little better, a little worse, or more of each. It would be amazing if we all banded together, and I love what your preaching. It’s just not realistic, simply because of human nature. We are all truly slaves to are nature
