5 Post Collapse Trades – What Do We Bring to the Table?

gunsmith

After the collapse, those of us who are writers, bloggers, and marketers, for example, may struggle with finding work and making it through.

This same situation may be true for people who have other careers in an office, or their job relies on the Internet. After all, our society depends on the Internet to maintain and create jobs and continue to develop more jobs (such as roles in social media) in the future.

However, when SHTF and we're unable to access the Internet, many of us will no longer have skills that'll get us through a survival situation. Trades that will help you survive will enable you to barter when the going gets tough and be able to dwell successfully in a world after a societal or economic collapse.

So what are some of the trades that can help you succeed after a collapse?

After the break, learn more about the trades and skills you should begin studying now to get ready for when SHTF.

I would have thought those with medical knowledge would be high on the list. Also those who can use natural or herbal medicine.

Number 5 is really something that you would need to know, not everybody can properly prepare seeds for planting.
Gun smithing I’m pretty good with, ammo reloading I can do but bullet making can be done with the proper equipment!
A black powder rifles would be an easier alternative.

Anyone who has ever had a toothache will tell you your list is a joke. Gunsmith? Why? If you bought a decent gun to start with it will function fine for years. Carpenter? If it’s a true post collapsed world housing will be abundant. Gardening may take months before you know where you can actually garden. If you have a medical emergency or a tooth problem all other problems are minor inconveniences.

I cannot believe that General Blacksmithing did not make this list.

Five actually important skills in an actual disaster situation. Creating and maintaining shelter. Cultivating food. Heating yourself and shelter. Preserving your food. Maybe sewing. This is the most bullshit ive seen with survival in mind.

People still need to drink water and we need to keep from contaminating our water sources. Water and wastewater operations are pretty important unless you enjoy water born ilnesses.

A good friend of mine is a farmer and I’ve been trying to convince that a GREAT post SHTF source of income would be to build a still and learn how to produce varying grades of alcohol . . medicinal/recreational, common for household use and industrial strength.

Where is the metal worker or blacksmith… how about the doctors. None of these trades work with out a blacksmith to make tools and none of the trades are any good if people get sick or injured and can’t work

I have a friend that’s living in a cabin deep in the woods, he put a automotive alternater with fan blades on a pole, wired in a solar panel, and a bank/rack of 8 12 car batteries. Interior and exterior lights on switches, a 12 volt water pump in a rain water catch tank. He’s got a nice set up. Creeks every where, game meat every where. It’s all good.

Finding pure water sources, how to maintain them and the logistics of getting it to your house and or shelter. This is in addition to the excellent ideas you and the other responders put forth.

Electronics repair? How about blacksmithing. When SHTF by way of EMP, electronics will be good for nothing

  17. William Collins said:

I’m with most of the people here. Electronics Repair? Come on! You would need some blacksmithing, animal husbandry, tailors, and so on. Think preindustrial revelation. What did a town need in the TV show Gunsmoke? Just an example! If an EMP caused the SHTF then all electronics would be obsolete regardless of solar power or not.

Plumbers, people that work in wastemanagement or know how to get rid of human waste safely. Blacksmithing and those who work in metal trades. Welders and fitters.

Ya screwed if you don’t understand metal and heat. Better have tangeables if you need one in a top down situation.

Been a Blacksmith for 55 years and have taught it the last 35 years so there some of us ready

EMP would take out a lot of electronics but you would be surprised how many would actually survive. Any electronics that where in a shipping container would be perfectly fine because the container would act as a faraday cage and protect them from the EMP. Most people think that every vehicle would be rendered useless after an EMP but this is untrue. Most vehicles have a metal box that the ECU is contained in, thus shielding it from EMP exposure. Electronics will still be useful for communication, transportation, tools and luxuries after a post SHTF scenario. While I’m not disputing the other skills you have suggested, but you should add a person with electronic skills to you group because there will be plenty to be found perfectly functional.

  23. Frank Hernigle said:

I personally think dentistry or physician would rank higher than electronic repair man. Or mortician as many will die someone has to be able to properly dispose of the dead.

  24. Draak Verbruggen said:

Blacksmith/metal fabrication would rank higher than electronics or household, I should think.
