If you are like me, you love reading about how North America was “settled,” from the initial exploration through the days of the “Wild West.”

The folks back then were of hardy stock, even the weak ones!

Those who thrived, however, tended to be a special breed of tough.

They had to battle the weather, hunger, thirst, often famine, intense heat and cold and wildlife that could just as well eat them as end up being sold for fur on the market.

Those who survived in the early frontier had to be self-sufficient and know how to survive any number of threats not only to their comfort but their well-being and even their lives.

Of course, over time, many of the stories surrounding these people have been embellished, but on the next page, we cover some of the hardiest of the hardy and the feats they accomplished as they became legends.
