Martial law. It's one phrase that terrifies all citizens, regardless of their political leanings. With martial law comes complete restrictions of rights and privileges, a weakened economy, and lessened individual power to enact change via voting or even protesting.
Of course, one could argue that we are under martial law right now, but compared to what our situation could be, any form of martial law that exists right now is child's play.
For true martial law, one or all of 5 things must occur, otherwise, the people see the enacting of martial law as an arbitrary crackdown and will fight back. For martial law to be truly effective, the people must think that the government is acting in the interest of the people.
One look at history, and you will know this is an absolute fallacy; martial law exists only for the benefit of those in power, and regardless of where you stand on the political playing field, you know that's not the voters.

We came very close to martial law in October 1962 during the Cuban missile crises. I was in the military then, and there was talk about what would we would do and what would happen if war broke out.

Martial law may work in the cities but it will never work in the mountains. We’re at a strategic advantage because we have the high ground. Tanks and support vehicles will find it almost impossible to navigate the heavily wooded steep terrain. A decent shot with a high powered rifle with a few extras and sufficient ammo can hold that ground with minimal effort for a good while. if 15 to 20 men were scattered along the ridge top with sufficient ammo they could hold the ground for a long time.

This would be easy to pull off in phases. If you go to war against a country, you attack their communications, utilities, (electric, water), cut off their food supply, spread disease, make the people WANT to go to fema camps for shelter. And THEN, you go city to city. It’s not like you’re going to be sitting in your nicely well lit house or apartment and there’s going to be a polite knock at the door asking for your guns.
