“I’m declaring martial law!”
We hear it often in movies when a catastrophic event has happened and the law, perhaps one man particularly, must be firm and tell the masses a clampdown has begun. It is often scary, very serious, and a signal there may be more bad news to come.
Yet, what is martial law really? Some will say it is forced military control, usually decided during a national disaster or an emergency such as an invasion from enemies.
It can be used by governments to enforce their rule over the public. Think of the Tiananmen Square protests from China in 1989. Martial law can be declared in cases of major natural disasters but most countries have other means of policing in this case.
Sadly, martial law is typically accompanied by curfews; the suspension of civil law and civil rights. Yet, some feel it is a necessary evil, otherwise, the world will self-destruct when the SHTF!
Wherever you stand on martial law, there is at least five (5) events that could lead to the United States declaring it.
