Wood ash is one of those bi-products of cooking or heating that tends to be ignored or overlooked.

It is smelly and messy and because of that, most of us give little thought to it other than having a place to dump it. We are throwing away, however a vital substance that has multiple uses, especially for someone who wants to live as self sufficiently as possible.

It is important that your ash be the bi-product of burnt wood with a minimal of other contributors (such as cardboard or other stuff you may burn,) but if it is pure wood ash, its uses are many. Your wood also cannot be treated in order for wood ash to be optimal.
