20 Survival Friendly Items Under $5

 

Next time you're at the hardware store or outdoor specialty shop, check out the clearance section. If you're like us, you shop with a purpose. We generally don't find ourselves browsing aisles for impulse items. But try to make it a habit to see what's on sale. You may have gone shopping with the intention of buying duct tape, but hell…. paracord is in the clearance bin, why not grab some? You know you'll use it.

 

1. Bicycle Tire Patch kit. A bicycle repair kit is essential if you're bugging out by bike. Your mode of transportation can easily be compromised by an obstacle in the road damaging your tires.

2. Burn Gel Packet. Pain relieving burn gel packets are perfect for standalone first aid or as a refill for a kit. This gel provides temporary relief of pain due to minor burns, cuts, scrapes and abrasions.

3. Chalk. Chalk is an unusual prep, but a great item for urban prepping to mark on concrete to help other members of your group get to safety with coded messages. The problem is rain. A Sharpie is another inexpensive prep; however, it may be considered graffiti, depending on the conditions of the event.

4. Chapstick. Chapstick is an essential everyday carry for so many reason. Who knew you could use it to make a fire starter, improvise a candle, and moisten your lips.

5. Ammonia Inhalant. Like smelling salts, ammonia inhalant is an aromatic stimulant to assist in reviving victims of fainting or shock. It's an easily overlooked prep that's so inexpensive.

6. Camp suds. Ensure your utensils and cooking equipment don't make you sick. Camp suds can help wash dishes and your body too! Best of all, Camp Suds won't harm the environment.

7. Cyalume snaplights are about $1 each. Get a pack of ten at the bottom of tee page. The SnapLight industrial grade green light stick will provideillumination for up to 12 hours. The chemiluminescent substance is non-toxic and plastic body is phthalate free for safety. They have a five-year shelf life.

8. Disposable thermometer. Ideal to limit contagion, a disposable thermometer is a good pandemic preparation to stock. Get a box of 10 disposable thermometers for around $4 and with included shipping.

9. Drop cloth. A drop cloth is available for as little as a dollar. A drop cloth will help in pandemic prepping, or as a temporary fix to windows. Plus, you can use it for all your camouflage painting projects.

10. Energy Chews. Energy chews are found individually packed in many mini survival tins and yet they are difficult to source by the package. 15. Iodine Prep pads. For around $1.50 Iodine prep pads for your first aid kit will help you prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes and minor burns. Povidone Iodine (10 percent USP) antiseptic wipes is a first aid antiseptic and germicide.

16. Krazy Glue. Super glue has many super cool uses for preppers. Be sure to have some on hand.

18. Potable Aqua Tablets. Humans are 60% water and must replenish water reserves daily. A human can survive just three days without water. With the threat of dysentery and cholera from uncertain water sources, it simply makes sense to carry potable Aqua Tablets. They are small enough to fit compactly into any survival kit, and they are available for around $5, so there's virtually no excuse not to have them handy.

19. Military Can openers. Survival can openers do more than just open cans. It also can be used as a cutting edge, screw driver, seam ripper, and groove cleaner among other uses.

20. Mylar blankets. Get a five-pack of emergency thermal mylar blankets for $5.

The iodine prep pads are great to have in your first aid kit as most don't come equipped with them. Also, in case you've ever suffered from a itchy bug bite, grab that anti itch cream too.
