
Many survivalists think they can handle anything that comes their way when doomsday arrives, but the truth is there is a lot more to surviving that stockpiling the best food, making sure you have enough water and supplies and having the perfect survival bag.

Even if you don't have a bug out location all setup, it's still a good idea to have a rugged vehicle you can count on during a SHTF moment. If you think about it, when the grocery stores have been wiped clean, and the police are no longer at their stations, you're the one who will need to stop criminals from discovering where you're hiding out.
Keep in mind that a rugged SHTF vehicle should be designed for fuel efficiency and keeping you safe, not just reliability.
Taking that into account, that means that today's cars just won't cut the mustard when it comes having the vital transportation you need to stay alive.

Ah yes, the 1980 Toyota long bed, with the 5 speed and 20R motor. I bought one from a dealer used that was originally the shop truck. It had 100k on the clock and before it was over i put another 230k more. This truck was amazing but not without its problems. I had modified mine with an Erson cam and spring kit, and even added a leaf spring to each side in the back.
The problems I had to address afterwards would have been nightmares had I not been a working mechanic. Every 6 months or so I had to tap in the pressed bearings in the back axle. No biggie, but the electronic voltage regulator was an expensive debacle which I had managed to circumvent with an add on volt and amp Guage and an added potentiometer rigged to a mechanical regulator. Periodically while driving, I had to dial in my charging rate manually, but the upside was that the little truck could be dialed up to a point where it could jump off a deisel with two dead batteries. I also had to add a secondary engine ground wire to.prevent fires. I drove that beast so hard that after about a year it shattered the casing of the 5 speed, so I.shoveled in a Celica 5 speed which died in 8.months. next was the 4 speed gear box from a one ton, which cost me my top end speed but was durable. Eventually the engine went down and got sick, but I still drove the thing for 7 months on 3 cylinders until I sold it as a running truck..

Older Dodge with a P pump Cummins. No electronics, lots of hauling capacity, no worry about fuel degregating like with gassers.

You are pretty much fucked with any vehicle that has electronic ignition and electronic fuel injection because the radiation will scramble the electronics. Best go with something ’73 and earlier with a carburetor and breaker points.

I live in the Adirondack park 11.8 million acres of rugged terrain unless you have a skidder it will be hard for any vehicle horse won’t care about emps either I have a sweet area that off grid in the middle of nowhere the only way to get there is by horse maybe a dirt bike but gas will be hard to find when you are in stealth mode.
With all the trouble we have with N. Korea, China, and now Russia, HEMP, along with old-aged grid ripe as a terrorist target… I wouldn’t be so quick to rule this out. If they know where to hit, a terrorist with an AK and one full magazine could plunge the US into a nation-wide grid failure that could take up to 2-3 years to get electricity back online.

Such a simple act cut power for over a year through this source.
Power substations are also easy targets.
Anyone with a bolt cutters and the know how can easily cripple them.
Most of those high voltage transformers and equipment take years to manufacture , ship and install.

I think that whatever it is you have as far as a vehicle is concerned your best bet is something that is as simple as possible to repair and something with absolutely proven long-term reliability I would definitely avoid things that have a lot of electronic crap in them keep it simple don’t have any kind of unnecessary electrical circuits and definitely I would recommend something capable of transporting not only yourself but your family and a large amount of materials and supplies if for example you have a need to go somewhere
