What the Red Cross Recommends Having in a Survival Kit for a “Normal” Survival Event

The US federal government cautions everyone to have a survival kit that will allow them to live comfortably without basic infrastructure for up to three days or 72 hours.

We all know the federal government is never the most “forward thinking” so if they are warning that you need to be prepared for 72 hours without basic infrastructure, the likelihood is that an emergency event could last much longer.

Basic infrastructure is kind of hard to define and depends on where you live, but generally, it encompasses power, communications, water, sewage and possibly passage on roads.

The type of emergency the feds are cautioning about depends on where a person lives and in any case, a major natural or man-made disaster could and likely would exceed three days.

In conjunction to the Feds' warning, the Red Cross has organized a basic list of survival items everyone should have and on the next page, we have that list.

You should be carrying that every day as part of your attire . It didn’t show shoes either. 🙂

You will also need matches, small tarp and 9 feet of cord. Survival blankets, small metal pot to boil water. Wet wipes toilet paper and a hand garden shovel to buyer your waste. Put matches in a zip lock bag to keep dry. Now you have the minimum.
