Homesteaders and farmers are a fascinating bunch and, once the grid goes down, when you and I are trying to figure out where we are going to find our next meal, they will already be eating scrambled eggs and sausage for breakfast!

But the wise chicken owner will know early on that year-round protection for their chicks is paramount! In other words, they need to be kept warm during those months, free from chills – yes – death, when ice and snow rear their timely heads!

    The heat lamp probably vreats enough artificial light to keep them laying. Nice to have eggs all winter, but birds will lay for fewer years.
