The reasoning behind hiding your survival gear are many, but two major reasons come to mind: It is for convenience and safety sake.
Convenience, because you have your survival gear on your person, as regular body-wear (Ladies, maybe a paracord necklace or bracelet?) you do not necessarily have to pack it all in you backpack or bug-out bag!
Safety can mean many things, but if we take down to a common denominator, it is never a good idea to advertise that you are becoming an expert at survival.
Once a situation turns bad, you will be the go-to guy for advice, which is fine, but the bad element knowing what you have in your survival arsenal can be a potentially dangerous proposition.
It’s always better to leave them guessing or completely unaware of what you have on your person.
