Cold Weather Survival – Priorities, Dos and Don’ts

Surviving in winter is much more difficult than making it through a survival situation in warmer weather.

It is not just the cold – although that is a challenge enough.

There is snow, ice and wind, decreased daylight and harsh conditions for anyone trying to locate or rescue you.

Those conditions that can hamper a rescue effort also make your existence much more difficult and in some cases, for both sides, deadly.

In one case in NH in 2015, a hiker got lost on a mountain trail and to get to that person, rescue, which quickly became recovery, team members had to battle 50 MPH sustained wind with gust up to 70, blizzard conditions and sub zero temperatures.

Winter survival requires a special set of skills and specialized equipment as well as a completely different mentality.
