Given the popularity of survival as a genre, survival gear has increased in price – by a lot since the days when survival preparation was the venue of “freaks” and “homesteaders.”

Visit any store that sells survival gear and it is easy to see how someone could blow an entire paycheck – or several – on survival equipment, materials, and supplies.

After perusing the survival fare of one local store, I could easily see how someone could spend thousands of dollars just on the “basics,” if they were not careful.

Worse, not all survival gear is equal.

Some stuff is simply junk dressed up as “vital” and other stuff you simply do not need.

Still, others promise performance that only works in testing laboratories.
