When a person gets hungry, it's hard for them to think clearly and when they're starving it's easy to become desperate. This is especially the case if they're starving in the wilderness unsure of when food will become available again.

To a person who is starving eating a green plan that looks somewhat familiar may seem like an okay choice. Or perhaps that fungus growing on the grass looks alright to eat and is worth the risk. It's the same way with thirst — that little pool of water looks pretty refreshing, enough to think that it's worth getting sick over (it isn't, you're just dehydrated).

Even though at the time eating something in the wild that you're unsure is safe enough to eat may seem alright at the time, it's best to make sure that it is indeed okay to eat. Otherwise, you may suffer the consequences.
