What Type of Sidearm Backup Bear Protection is Best?

gun ammo

A bear is a formidable foe and can be largely unpredictable. While most will turn and run if they think humans are near, there are some that simply won't care.

The bears that are likely not to care are mothers with cubs and those who won't hear you coming over the sound of their own paws crashing through the underbrush.

Suddenly you're standing face to face with a wall of claws, fur, and muscles.

Hopefully, you've packed a weapon capable of either fending off or taking down this beast.

But not all firearms are the equal, and what you think will save your life may in fact just piss the bear off.

Check out what we mean on the next page.

Ruger Super Blackhawk with 300 grain bullet. It will at least slow him up a bit. Rifle is my model 71 Winchester converted to 50 Alaskan.

I read that the very first thing you should do before taking a pistol into bear country is to file off the front sight. That way when the bear takes the gun and shoves it up your$#%&!@*it won’t hurt as much. (I still carry my 357 however)

Long time ago I used to work on a land survey team in the northern Karl Marxifornia Serra Nevada mountains. Carried flags, stakes, food, water. machete, and a Ruger Security Six packed with 158 grain +P+ hollow points. Worked really good on mountain lions.

The Smith & Wesson Mountain gun is a surprisingly lightweight wheel gun, in which the recoil of a 44 Magnum 300 grain hollowpoint is very manageable, even for many women. For 20 years this has been my go to favorite.

You people who have never even been in bear country should go back to your video games…. In real life you carry what you own. anything is better than nothing…That being said, I would , if I had My choice, Carry a 18 in 45-70 lever action rifle and a 45 colt revolver on my belt. yes i grew up in bear country if you think im full of$#%&!@* Now I live in Houston…would rather fight the bears ! !lol they only eat tourists anyway

Always carry a 22. It is very light and it will slow down the person you are with, giving you time to outrun the bear. Lol

  14. Ed Johnson said:

No Mark , the first rule of being in bear country is . Always be with someone who you can out run.

  15. Daryl Ehret said:

If you take your buddies hearing aids, you won’t even need a 22.
