When someone says “natural disaster,” most of us think about summer thunderstorms, torrential rains, tornadoes or a Fall Hurricane, something to prepare for when the weather is fairly cooperative in the aftermath of a survival incident.

We often overlook cold weather preparation because most of us either do not encounter much winter weather or we are used to it, so surviving a survival incident is not foremost on the mind.

It should be.

In well over half the USA, winter weather can pose immense risks, ranging from ice storms and blizzards to brutal cold snaps and falling limbs that severe power, sometimes for days.

One ice storm in New Hampshire a few years ago, for instance, cut off power to over a third of the state's residences and half of those did not get power back on for over a week.
