If you have to use your firearms in a SHTF scenario, or a “grid-down” situation, regular use will eventually degrade your ammunition magazines and if you are in a situation where you go through all the bullets in your magazine, you will need to have at least a few replacements.
The last thing you want to have happen is to have to stop and reload – especially if it is a life threatening situation!
Generally, most of us have a few extras for each firearm, but how many should you have in stock?
There is no “right answer” to this, but one thing is for sure – you probably do not have enough.

I’m really annoyed that Magpul stopped packaging their Gen 2 mags with covers. I don’t want to leave them loaded without the covers.
It has already hit the fan, just waiting for it to spread out and hit us.
9 mags for rifle 8 for pistol. In the hypothetical “SHTF” end of the world, my rig may be 1 in the rifle, 3 in the tac vest, 3 packed away loaded, ready to refill the vest. Thats 7, so the other 2 are spares. With sidearm, 1 in the gun, 2 on my belt, 3 loaded and packed away for refill’s, and 2 spares (3 spares if its a 1911). That totals 8 (or 9 for 1911’s). Systems vary, know what works for you before you need it.
I guess it depends how many guns you can fire at the same time? My guess would be 2. Shouldn’t take more than 1 shot per, or your screwed anyways lol
you need enough to survive a firefight and get food when killing people with guns you acquire their ammo. so not a vast amount is needed. Just rationing and tactics.

This is where I differ in opinion. A little. When the SHTF, the ammo & powder WILL run out. Much quicker than most think. Then you are at the mercy of a powerful enemy that literally has you out gunned. I will be relying more on my bow & arrows (which I can make much easier than powder & ammo) and camouflage and subterfuge. Learn how to get clean water, hunting, fishing and seed harvesting to sustain you & yours. I like the idea of fighting for my freedom, but I also want to live.

I gpot a Ruger commander 1911 45cal and have four ten round mags.
Look at the amount of people in a riot and tell me if you think even a belt fed will stop the masses if they wanted what you have. The answer is it won’t one family simply cannot fend of a army of hunger people with nothing to lose. Sad but true…..

I do not believe he means this as an “one or the other” choice. You should be well rounded in both. Everyone wants to live, but in the event you have to defend yourself in the beginning of a SHTF situation when people still have plenty of ammo, you don’t want to bring a bow to a gun fight.
At the same rate, you don’t want to use a gun to hunt if you intend to spend the rest of your life (or a long time) in a broken society that will not be rebuilt. You will run out of ammo.

As long as you realize guns have a place but are not the panacea.
In a fire fight where you are trapped in your home and fighting against a superior force, you will only use about 11 rounds before the fight is over, unless you have a very serious plan of engagement.
Just remember flock vests mean nothing… head shots will do for the blue helmets … and anyone who oppose us…

How fast can you shot your bow?answer not fast enough! They’re not going chase you for bow, they’re going to check on what you left behind. You shoot maybe 50yd.s, they will pick you off very easy 100yd.s!!
