
Surviving in the outdoors in winter requires an entirely different set of skills in comparison to surviving when the weather, elements, and environment are warmer.
Like it or not, even if you love winter, survival in spring, summer and fall is on many levels easier (although poses different challenges.)
One major challenge is finding or creating a warm, dry shelter that can insulate you from the elements; this is critical if your situation is likely to be longer than just a few hours.
Being able to build a secure, comfortable, warm and waterproof shelter is vital to your safety and well-being, not to mention your state of mind.
One option is the shelter explained in the video on the next page – the video shows how to make it, waterproof it and include a wood stove for heat = all it lacks is Wifi and Netflix!

The one thing I’ve noticed about these tarp shelters is:
Don’t forget ventilation.
Get “rained” on once, and it’ll change your thinking on a freezing day.
That wouldn’t stand two days snowfall here.
Furthermore, with all that plastic – you’ll get more wet inside than outside…

I am pretty sure that this would not stand up against the high winds in the Dakotas.
Give me a good waterproofed canvas tarp any day over these cheap plastic ones. With a hole for the stove pipe and the proper metal collar you don’t have to worry about your roof melting from the heat in the stove pipe. With that and a few of the reinforced space blankets, you can make a dry, warm and durable shelter that will keep you snug and comfortable in below zero temps.
Who Carey’s 1500 sq. ft. Of tarp or plastic in there pack? Just curious.
