One of the keys to getting out of a Mountain Lion encounter in one piece is to avoid the encounter altogether.

If you find yourself facing one, however, what this guy does is pretty smart; the key is to keep calm and not give the cat any excuse to initiate a confrontation.

The term “Mountain Lion” is a bit of a misnomer.

Cougars, panthers, pumas, Catamount or painters are prolific in certain areas of the West, present in the Everglades swamps and allegedly sighted intermittently in dozens of other US states and Canada.

The approach to ensure they do not make you a meal is the same all over; do you have a strategy for a big cat encounter or an encounter story? If so, tell us below.

So important to have a meaningful conversation with the beast cause they understand every word you say… wtf! Rule number one, enter their domain armed and ready! Rule number two, refer to rule number one!

I love living in the Midwest. Bears, wolves, mountain lions I have no problem with; it’s the poisonous snakes and other vermin you just run into in warmer climes that I’m a wuss for.

That is why I am ALWAYS armed in the woods. I encountered a cougar in the woods once when I was 14 years old. I had a shotgun so I wasn’t too worried. It was one of the most magical moments of my life, but I was prepared to defend myself if I had needed to.
