
Apart from preventing yourself from being hunted, you may also want to carve a spear to aid in hunting for yourself. Depending on your needs, there are different types of spear designs available for you to use.

As you can see in the video, for defense you'll want a bigger, heavier spear which you can rely on not to snap in half like a twig when you're fending off a bear with it (Note: Fighting back should only be used for black bears, and even that will be difficult. Grizzlies get very aggressive when things fight back against them, and have even been known to throw black bears up into trees with one swipe of their claws).
For hunting, you'll want a smaller and lighter spear which can be thrown; the atlatl is perfect for this because it can be launched with great speed and precision when practiced.
