
So you are stranded in a relatively warm or tropic area (or even New England) and need to eat.
You can try catching fish, but that can take a substantial amount of effort. And any effort spent means calories are being burned up by your body. In a survival situation, you don't want to do that.
Your dinner might be right under your feet!
Clams react to salinity, which is a secret most clam diggers know, but few else.
When the underground environment clams dig (pun intended) becomes to “salty” they move and extend to gain less a less saline environment.
Depending on the the type of clam, the reaction is different (these are also called razorfish) but even in a region where you only have what most of us regard as “traditional,” even US East Coast Clams (Yum,) salt makes them move.
